About the village

Thomas Hardy knew Marnhull as Marlott — the home village of Tess in Tess of the d'Urbervilles, with the 16th-century Crown Inn appearing as the Pure Drop Inn. The 15th-century tower of St Gregory's church is a landmark across the Vale, and the village's New Street and Burton Street areas have been conservation areas since 1971. Marnhull today has two primary schools, a GP surgery, a village hall on Burton Street, a recreation ground with pavilion and all-weather courts, and two pubs.
